I am still mulling over who I might want to support for President. Donald Trump is a new kind of crazy politician and I'm not ready to adopt his insane racist views. The man is too arrogant and he says he knows how to run a successful business, but he has gone through more bankruptcies than me. I'm afraid Trump would bankrupt the US. Sanders makes more sense.
The heart of our country's political malaise is the artificial extremism in both political parties. Democrats want to tax the rich and Republicans want to reduce taxes (and government). Neither group seems to be serious about serving the people who elect them. You can be elected to Congress on a ridiculous extremist platform because you only have to appeal to a small group of people. But whoever is elected President has to appeal to a majority.
That means our extreme points of view in Congress are diametrically opposed to the generalist points of view in the White House. No Senator from the State of California is going to put the interests of New Hampshire's residents ahead of the interests of Californians, but if that is better for the nation's population in general then that is what the California Senator should do.
Our states have been following self-centered Congressional policies since the Constitution became the law of the land and this lack of national interest-focused politics is what led to the Civil War. What would have been better for the US as a country (to stay together and resolve the slavery issue without killing almost 1 million people) would have happened if "States Rights" had not been the rallying cry for the South.
Bernie Sanders wants to do what's right for the country, and that includes raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans, creating higher paying jobs, giving everyone a free college education, and giving everyone truly affordable health care (not this Obamacare crap that doesn't work except for a minority of people).
The Republican Party acts like it lives in another universe. They want to lower taxes on everyone, which means cutting government programs that create jobs, provide healthcare for retirees and poor people, and maintain national defense. At the same time the Republicans want to increase defense spending. Where are they going to get this money if they cut the Treasury's income?
Republicans cannot do the math. I guess that tells you what attending private school on a voucher gets you. And Republicans cannot bring themselves to admit that rising ocean levels are connected to melting glaciers and arctic ice. To be a Republican means you have to ignore everything science is telling us about global warming and pretend that the science isn't in. Meanwhile they want to spend more money on rebuilding thousands of miles of beaches along our coasts.
The Republicans are the worst solution for the problems this country faces because they ARE the worst problem this country faces. I hope the Republican Party implodes with this election because they need to dump those Tea Party lunatics and learn some real American values.
Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders is sounding like the most sane candidate in the whole election. I hope his rhetoric sparks real change among our political leadership. It should not matter who is elected President as long as they do the right thing (create more high-paying jobs and start taxing millions of illegal immigrants).
