Workplace Yoga Helps Relieve On-the-Job Stress

A very interesting study conducted among emergency room nurses found that an 8-week "mindfulness" intervention reduced stress levels among the employees in the intervention group.  Employees assigned to a control group who received no intervention did not see a reduction of workplace stress.

This study shows why we need to change our work habits.  According to the report, participants in the intervention group used "mindfulness, gentle stretching, yoga, meditation and music conducted in the workplace" to relax and cope with their stress.  The intervention group saw a significant reduction in stress symptoms as measured through chemical analysis of their saliva.

Stress is a part of modern life and I am surprised it has taken us this long  to recognize the benefits of giving workers time to relax and take their minds off the stressful parts of their jobs throughout the day.

I don't know if I want to practice yoga but stretching, walking, and listening to calming music all sound like great ways to break the constant flow of environmental noise and situational anxiety we face in all kinds of jobs.
