"What are men compared to rocks and mountains" is one of my favorite lines from a book or movie. Of course I am speaking of "Pride and Prejudice". I like the movie starring Keira Knightley but I have read the book and most find it dissatisfying. The difference between the movie and the book is probably that the book was written so long ago for an audience that is no longer around today.
Rocks and mountains are hard things, but both may be worn down by time. Is a man worn down so easily or even more so? A man's ambitions may wear down rocks and mountains faster than time, but the rocks and mountains may destroy the man.
We live in a perilous age when men dream of governing rocks and mountains, and yet the rocks and mountains can slay men with the capriciousness of unrelenting natural constructions. They are mindless, spiritless, and heedless of our ambitions, and yet we feel the need to conquer them.
Are men therefore less than the rocks and mountains or is it simply that rocks and mountains are more easily understood than men?
